How to set up L2TP / IPSec VPN on Windows 7 – Manual

Step 1.

Open up Control Panel by clicking “Start” then “Control Panel”.

Step 2.

Click “Network and Internet”.

Step 3.

Click “Network and Sharing Center”.

Step 4.

Click “Set up a new connection or network”.

Step 5.

Click “Connect to a workplace”.

Step 6.

Click “Use my Internet connection (VPN)”.

Step 7.

  • Internet address” – IP-address that you received in the e-mail.
  • Destination name” – name as you see fit.

Check “Don’t connect now; just set it up so I can connect later”.

Click “Next”.

Step 8.

  • User name” – enter your username that you set at the initial configuring of the server.
  • Password” – enter your password that you set at the initial configuring of the server.

Make sure you use your VPN username and password and NOT the Client Area credentials.

Click “Create”.

Step 9.

Click “Change adapter settings” in “Network and Sharing Center”.

Step 10.

Click the VPN connection.
Click “Change settings of this connection”.

 

 

 

Step 11.

Click the “Security” tab.

Change the following settings:

  • Type of VPN” – Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPSec).
  • Data encryption” – Require encryption (disconnect if server declines).
  • Allow these Protocols” – Radio button selected.
  • Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP)” – Checked.
  • Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)” –  Checked.

Step 12.

Click “Advanced Settings”.
Enter “Preshare key” – vpnext.

Click “OK”.

 

Step 13.

Click “Start this connection”.
