How to set up L2TP / IPSec VPN on Windows 10 – Manual

Step 1.

Click “Start” then “Settings”.

Step 2.

Click “Network & Internet”.

Step 3.

Click “VPN”.
Click “Add a VPN Connection”.

Step 4.

Fill in the fields with the following settings:

  • “VPN provider” – Windows (built-in).
  • Connection name” –  set name as you see fit.
  • Server name or address” – type IP address that you received in the e-mail.
  • VPN type” – select “L2TP/IPSec with pre-shared key”.
  • Pre-shared key” – vpnext.
  • Type of sign-in info” – select “User name and password”.
  • User name” – enter your username that you set at the initial configuring of the server.
  • Password” – enter your password that you set at the initial configuring of the server.

Make sure you use your VPN username and password and NOT the Client Area credentials.

Check all selected data once again and press “Save”.

Step 5.

Click “Change adapter options”.

Step 6.

Click the VPN and then “Change settings of this connection”. Or right-click on your created VPN connection and go to “Properties”.

Step 7.

Click the “Security” tab.

Change the following settings:

  • Type of VPN” – Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPSec).
  • Data encryption” – Require encryption (disconnect if server declines).
  • Allow these Protocols” – Radio button selected.
  • Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP)” – Checked.
  • Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)” –  Checked.

Step 8.

Click “Advanced Settings”.
Enter “Preshare key” – vpnext.

Click “OK”.

Step 9.

Click “Connect”.
